Geovany Quenda is set to join Chelsea this weekend, concluding an 18-month preparation period dubbed the 'Road to London.' The 19-year-old winger, acquired from Sporting Lisbon for up to £44 million, is scheduled to begin pre-season training under manager Xabi Alonso.

Sources close to Quenda describe the move as the "opportunity of a lifetime" and have indicated that the player has been privately preparing for this transition for the past six months. This preparation included undergoing surgery in London for a fractured fifth metatarsal in his right foot. Rather than returning to Sporting after the procedure, Quenda remained under Chelsea's care, following a detailed training and nutrition program designed by his future club.

Upon his return to Sporting in April 2026, Quenda had reportedly gained muscle mass during his rehabilitation at Chelsea's Cobham training ground. This was a deliberate effort to prepare him for the physical demands of the Premier League. Despite being sidelined, he managed to return to finish the 2025-26 season with Sporting, though he primarily served as an impact substitute. The club finished second in the Primeira Liga and lost the Taca de Portugal final.

Quenda concluded his injury-interrupted season with six goals and nine assists for Sporting. Following a brief rest, he joined Portugal's Under-21 team, scoring twice in a 4-0 victory over Northern Ireland on June 3. He has accumulated 11 goals in 30 appearances for Portugal's youth squads and received a senior call-up at age 17, though he is still awaiting his debut for the senior national team.

Instead of taking a traditional holiday, Quenda has maintained a "no days off" mantra, working daily with a personal trainer in Lisbon. His regimen has included recovery and strength training sessions similar to those provided by Chelsea. He has spent time with family and friends and has been saying his goodbyes to teammates and staff at Sporting.

Alonso plans to use the pre-season to evaluate players, and reports suggest Quenda is expected to remain with Chelsea rather than go on loan. His versatility is seen as a significant asset, as he can play as a winger on either side or as a No. 10. He previously played as a right wing-back in a back-three system under Ruben Amorim at Sporting.

Chelsea's pursuit of Marco Palestra from Atalanta further suggests Alonso's interest in utilizing a back-three system with wing-backs. Quenda, like Palestra, is considered a versatile player capable of fitting into Alonso's tactical approaches.
