Georgia Tech Captain Kyle Efford Announces Medical Retirement from Football

Georgia Tech linebacker Kyle Efford announced Tuesday that he is medically retiring from football due to a recurring shoulder injury. Despite ending his playing career, Efford will continue his role as a team captain and will take on player-coach responsibilities for the remainder of the season.

Efford sustained the injury that forced his retirement during a Week 2 matchup against Tennessee, aggravating a previous surgically repaired shoulder. He led the Yellow Jackets in tackles for the past three seasons, accumulating 250 tackles over his college career.

"Over the past few years, my body has taken more damage than I can continue to ignore," Efford stated. "Damage that will continue to remind me of the sport that I love many years down the road. And while my heart and mind still have so much more to give, I've reached a point where I have to start thinking about the life I have ahead of me."

Efford acknowledged that this was not the ending he envisioned for his football career but expressed that he leaves without regrets. "This isn't how I imagined my football career coming to an end, but I am at peace. I can say with complete confidence that I gave this game every single piece of me. There is nothing left in the tank, and there are no regrets in my heart."

During his time with Georgia Tech, Efford earned numerous accolades. He served as a team captain in both 2024 and 2026. He was a two-time All-ACC selection, receiving third-team honors in 2024 and honorable mention recognition in 2025. Off the field, he was named to the All-ACC Academic Team and graduated in December 2025.

The Yellow Jackets experienced success during Efford's tenure, winning 30 games and appearing in three consecutive bowl games. The team began the 2026 season with two losses before securing a 28-25 victory over Duke in Week 6.
