Georgia Stanway 'Unplayable' as Forward Displays 'Warrior' Mentality for England

Georgia Stanway has established herself as a formidable presence for the England women's national football team, consistently finding the back of the net and demonstrating a crucial "warrior" mentality. Her scoring prowess was particularly evident throughout the recent season, where she finished as England's top scorer, netting 11 goals in her last 11 matches.

This goal-scoring form places Stanway among the top European players for international goals scored since Euro 2025. While manager Sarina Wiegman expressed frustration with the team's overall lack of ruthlessness in a recent match against Greece, Stanway remained a constant threat, ensuring she contributed to the scoreline.

In the game against Greece, Stanway's impact was highlighted when she received a long ball, controlled it with a deft touch, and fired it powerfully into the net. Although the goal was disallowed for offside, Wiegman acknowledged the athleticism and composure displayed by the midfielder.

"She is always so eager to go towards goal. She has that tenacity in her," Wiegman commented on Stanway's form. "She is always aggressive out of possession but also in possession. She scored a great header and controlled that really good ball from Alex Greenwood. That was really good athleticism and composure. Unfortunately, that was disallowed but it was really good!" Wiegman also noted Stanway's contributions beyond scoring, including her ability to retain possession and connect with teammates.

Former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis described Stanway as "unplayable at times" during the match against Greece. Statistics from the game show Stanway winning all her tackles, achieving a 90% passing accuracy, taking four shots, and scoring one goal with another disallowed.

Stanway also adapted to a slightly different role, playing primarily as a right winger due to midfield adjustments. This flexibility was enabled by a new-look midfield featuring 20-year-old debutant Lexi Potter. Potter's presence allowed the more experienced Stanway and Keira Walsh to push further up the pitch, with Lauren James operating in a number 10 role. This tactical tweak proved effective, with Stanway causing continuous problems for the opposition and adapting impressively to the changes.

"Stanway has shown how flexible she is, how exceptional she is both at the bottom end of the pitch, breaking up play, as well as at the top end," Brown-Finnis added. "She was playing as a second striker, playing out on the right, dropping deep as a number 10. She's been absolutely brilliant."

England faces a two-legged play-off tie against Ukraine later this year to secure qualification for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil. The team has already demonstrated its dominance over Ukraine, achieving a 9-1 aggregate victory in previous qualifying matches.

Wiegman is considering the recent formation experiment as a potential option for future games, aiming to bring out the best in Stanway and other players. "I liked the balance of the midfield. There is a lot of competition going on in that area," Wiegman admitted. "There were a few reasons. First of all, I wanted to see Lexi Potter deeper on the pitch and what that might bring. There was also the option to put Georgia Stanway higher up the pitch. We wanted to score more goals and we know that she can do that. She can play in the pocket and also deeper on the pitch so we wanted to see all of that."
