New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith addressed his recent legal troubles on Tuesday, apologizing for any distraction they may have caused the team during the offseason. As the Jets reported for training camp, Smith emphasized his commitment to moving forward and building positive momentum.

"I really hate the fact that something I was a part of what could have been a distraction for this team, my teammates, this organization, because a lot of hard work has been put in and a lot of guys have put a lot of work in for us to be in a good spot as a team," Smith stated during his press conference. "I’m happy that I’m able to put this behind me; I’m looking forward to moving forward and continuing to build day by day with my guys."

Smith's offseason included three incidents with Florida police. In April, he was stopped for driving with improper tags. In June, police responded to his residence following an allegation of assault, though no charges were filed. Most recently, on July 6, he was cited for exceeding the speed limit.

Smith confirmed he has spoken with team leadership and veteran players about the incidents. "I’ve had conversations with Coach [Robert] Saleh, with [Darren Mougey], and with all the veterans on the team and the guys on the team," he said. "But like I said, we’ll put this behind us and we’re moving forward."

When asked about potential changes to avoid future negative attention, Smith redirected the focus to upcoming practices. "I just look forward to practice tomorrow and moving towards the season," he said.

The Jets also made roster moves, placing edge Joseph Ossai on the physically unable to perform list and activating wide receiver Tim Patrick off the PUP list, making him eligible to practice.

Smith rejoined the Jets in March following a trade with the Raiders. The team is set to hold its first training camp practice on Wednesday morning.
