Gavin McKenna, widely projected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, is preparing to step into the professional hockey spotlight and is unfazed by the prospect of becoming a polarizing figure. The draft is set to take place on Friday, with McKenna widely expected to be selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

McKenna has been accustomed to attention since his early teens, having signed autographs as young as age 14. Now 18, he is eager for his NHL dream to be realized.

"I've just been super excited," McKenna told reporters during pre-draft availability. "Obviously, I've thought about it. But at the end of the day, wherever I get picked, I'm excited. It's the NHL draft. I get to experience it with my family and go through it with them. So the fact that it's here, I know my family and I are pumped."

His path to the top of the draft class was not without its challenges. McKenna faced scrutiny after a slower start to his season, leading some to question his top prospect status. However, his performance improved significantly in the latter half of the season. He recorded 14 points in seven games at the World Juniors, contributing to Canada's bronze medal win. He followed this with a strong finish for Penn State, accumulating 33 points in his final 19 games.

Despite the considerable expectations, McKenna stated his intention to embrace a challenging role. "I want to be a villain wherever I go," he said with a grin. He indicated that he is prepared for the pressure that comes with being a high draft pick and does not anticipate faltering under scrutiny. His consistent presence in the media since his adolescence has prepared him for the public attention that accompanies an NHL career.

McKenna expressed a desire to fully absorb the experience of his entry into the NHL. "I've been on a lot of journeys, and the fact that the draft is here, it's flown by," he commented. "I'm just really trying to take it all in. You only get to go through this once in your life."
