Spain midfielder Gavi stated that Argentina's Leandro Paredes should not be suspended for his involvement in the post-World Cup final confrontation. The incident occurred after Spain secured a 1-0 victory over Argentina.
During the celebrations, Paredes, along with Nahuel Molina and Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala, were involved in a pitchside altercation. Paredes was seen pushing Spain's Eric Garcia by the throat. Gavi, an unused substitute at the time, attempted to intervene but was pushed to the ground by Almada. Paredes then placed his hand in Gavi's face, pushing the Spanish midfielder down.
FIFA has initiated an investigation, appointing a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine the events. Players and coaches involved in such incidents can face suspensions, and the Argentine Football Association is also liable to be fined.
"I don't think [Paredes] should be suspended," Gavi told El Partidazo de COPE. "I understand it's not a good image for children, but I think there's also that side to football, which is a bit more physical, more aggressive."
Gavi added that the most logical outcome would have been a red card issued during the match itself. "In the end, I think it's all football, and it has to be that way," he concluded.
