Pierre Gasly of Alpine captured a surprising pole position at the Italian Grand Prix, finishing 0.060 seconds ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell.

Gasly, who previously won at Monza in 2020 with Red Bull's junior team, will start from the front of the grid. McLaren's Oscar Piastri qualified in third place, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton securing fourth and fifth, respectively, despite an engine upgrade.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull qualified sixth, while Lando Norris, also of McLaren, managed only ninth after a challenging session. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes qualified seventh but is set to start from the back of the grid due to a penalty for a component change.
