Gary Neville Criticizes Cole Palmer's Red Card in Chelsea's Loss to Spurs
Former England defender believes Chelsea star 'lost his head' during the match and argues another player should have been sent off.
Gary Neville, the former England defender, has strongly criticized Chelsea player Cole Palmer's red card during the team's recent defeat against Spurs. Neville asserted that Palmer "lost his head" after receiving two quick yellow cards, leading to his dismissal from the match.
The first yellow card was issued to Palmer for shoving Mateus Fernandes. Shortly after, Palmer received a second booking for what Neville described as a "very naughty" challenge on Conor Gallagher. This second offense resulted in his sending off.
Chelsea's performance was further hampered by an own goal from Mike Penders, which gave Spurs the lead from a corner. The team's situation worsened when Mathys Tel scored a second goal for Spurs late in the game. This victory marked a significant achievement for Tottenham, as they became only the second Spurs team in 36 years to secure a win at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville commented on Palmer's actions, stating, "Cole Palmer has lost his head. To do that five minutes after the challenge on Fernandes is just silly." He added, "He sticks his studs in on him, he knows exactly what he's doing. It's not a good challenge. It is naughty, very naughty. He's experienced enough to know."
Neville also questioned Palmer's initial reaction to Fernandes' handball, which resulted in a yellow card for Fernandes. "Why has Palmer done that? I'm not sure why he reacts," Neville said. "Fernandes has handballed it and it's a clear yellow card. Palmer's reaction looks silly. He's asking for trouble."
Adding to the controversial moments, Neville suggested that Morgan Rogers should also have been sent off for a challenge on Gallagher. "I think that's a red. I do," Neville stated. "He's absolutely wellied him with no intent. That's ludicrous from Rogers. They have lost it. Xabi Alonso needs to get them off."
Palmer will be eligible to play in Chelsea's next league match against Manchester United. However, he will serve his suspension during Chelsea's Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool on Wednesday.
