Garnacho Facing Upward Battle for Aston Villa Playing Time

Alejandro Garnacho is finding it challenging to secure significant playing time at Aston Villa since his summer transfer, accumulating just 31 competitive minutes and facing scrutiny from manager Unai Emery for perceived dawdling before substitutions.

The forward's initial impact has been hampered by a facial injury sustained in pre-season, which also ruled him out of Villa's UEFA Super Cup tie in August. With Emery known for rotating his squad, Garnacho is anticipating an opportunity in Wednesday's Carabao Cup fixture against Coventry City.

His loan move to Villa is structured to become a permanent £43 million transfer next summer, contingent on him meeting what Chelsea reportedly considers 'easily achievable' targets.

Settling into Emery's system has proven difficult for some new recruits. Captain John McGinn described the manager's tactical approach as "demanding" and requiring significant "work in the classroom," noting that adaptation takes time due to its unique structure beyond standard formations.

Emery has largely favored players he knows well this season. New signings who have earned his trust include goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and midfielder Joao Gomes, while others like Ibrahim Mbaye, Matteo Ruggeri, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis are still striving to make their mark. Johan Manzambi has recently returned from injury, and Leon Goretzka is sidelined.

The club's experience with Harvey Elliott last season serves as a cautionary tale. Elliott, on loan from Liverpool, was expected to trigger a £35 million transfer if he made at least 10 appearances. However, Emery opted against keeping him, leaving the midfielder in limbo for the remainder of the season.

Garnacho's situation, while not yet at that stage, makes the Coventry match a pivotal moment. A strong performance there could influence Emery's decision for the upcoming Premier League clash against Tottenham.

"His attitude is positive," Emery stated about Garnacho. "That is very important. Now he needs time, and hard work every day, which is showing in his attitude. He has played a few minutes and it was not enough – first, the minutes he played and second, the things he showed. But progressively I am seeing him better."

The competition for wide attacking roles at Villa is intense. George Hemmings has impressed since emerging from the club's youth ranks, starting every game this season. The 18-year-old Mbaye, a £50 million acquisition, is also vying for a place, as is McGinn. Alysson has also shown promise, scoring Villa's first league goal of the campaign.

Emery expressed a desire to see Garnacho perform at the level he achieved at his previous clubs. "He has this challenge, and it's my challenge to help him achieve it," Emery said. "He needed time to adapt to us and to get his fitness, and there is still work to do. But we have signed him for a long time and we will help him feel comfortable with us, feel confident with us and to exploit his qualities in our tactical structure."

Garnacho's most productive period came in the 2023-24 season, when he scored 20 goals and provided 17 assists for Manchester United. Reaching that form again is seen as key to making his permanent move to Villa a formality. However, consistent playing time is the immediate priority, and if the Coventry match doesn't provide that, questions about his future opportunities may begin to arise.
