Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo scored for the Netherlands in their World Cup fixture against Morocco, mere days after his partner announced the loss of their unborn son. The 27-year-old opened the scoring for the Dutch side in their round of 32 match, which ultimately concluded in a 1-1 draw after extra time, with the Netherlands losing 3-2 on penalties.
Gakpo's partner, model Noa van der Bij, shared the news on Saturday, stating that the couple had been expecting their second child, with the baby due in October. Gakpo chose to remain with the national squad.
Following his goal, Gakpo was surrounded by his teammates, who embraced him as he fell to his knees. Netherlands and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk offered comfort to Gakpo as the players returned to their half of the field.
Van der Bij posted an image on social media showing the couple holding hands over a blanket and a knitted hat. "With broken hearts, we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during pregnancy," she wrote. "Thank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever loved. Forever our son."
Gakpo had started all of the Netherlands' World Cup games, scoring three goals prior to this match. He was substituted in the 113th minute against Morocco and did not participate in the penalty shootout. Morocco equalized in stoppage time through Illaiss Chair, forcing extra time before they secured victory in the shootout.
