Fury and Joshua arrive in London as heavyweight clash nears

Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua have both arrived in London ahead of Wednesday's launch news conference for their highly anticipated heavyweight contest. The fight, which has been more than a decade in the making, now appears to be on track for its scheduled date of December 11 at Cardiff's Principality Stadium, following several days of speculation and doubt.

Fury traveled back from the United States, where he had been vacationing with his family, while Joshua flew in from his training camp in Dubai.

The bout was officially announced on Thursday by Saudi Arabian official Turki Alalshikh. However, doubts emerged just 24 hours later due to a dispute concerning the role of UFC chief Dana White in the promotion. Broadcaster Netflix had stated that Alalshikh's The Ring and White would collaborate on the event's promotion. In contrast, Joshua's promoter, Eddie Hearn, indicated that his fighter's contract prohibited White from having any promotional involvement.

White himself commented on Saturday night that he was unaware whether the fight or Wednesday's news conference would proceed. BBC Sport has since learned that White will not be attending the launch event.

A further potential complication arose late Monday regarding Fury's enrollment in the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (Vada) testing program. However, Fury's manager, Spencer Brown, has since confirmed that Fury is now enrolled with Vada, seemingly resolving another issue before the press conference.

This is not the first time attempts have been made to stage a fight between Fury and Joshua, with several previous efforts failing to materialize. Wednesday's event, to be held at the British Airways ARC in Olympia, will mark the first time the two boxers have met face-to-face since the fight's official announcement. A limited number of tickets will also be made available to the public.

The recent uncertainty has cast a shadow over a contest that many fans felt had already arrived too late in both fighters' careers. The narrative surrounding the bout shifted from boxing matchups to disputes over promoters, contractual clauses, and egos. This development has been noted as a poor reflection on the sport, particularly given the reported shared purse of close to $200 million (£151 million), backed by influential figures.

Despite the recent turbulence, Wednesday's press conference offers an opportunity to shift the focus back to the boxing itself. If Fury and Joshua can generate excitement and project confidence, some of the negative noise from the past few days may begin to fade.
