America's hopes of ending a 23-year wait for a men's Grand Slam singles title suffered a blow Saturday as Taylor Fritz was eliminated from the US Open in a grueling five-set match against Francisco Cerundolo.

Fritz, the ninth seed and last year's finalist, fell to Cerundolo, the 24th seed, with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 4-6. The defeat was particularly stinging for Fritz, who led by two sets before Cerundolo mounted a comeback. "I don't even know what to say," a visibly emotional Fritz stated in his post-match press conference. "I don't want to, like - I don't really want to talk to anybody, see anybody. I kind of just need to get out for a couple days, and then just get back to work. I don't know how I let that happen today."

Fritz had been seen as one of the most prominent American contenders, having reached the final in 2024. His loss highlights the continued challenge for American men in securing a Grand Slam title, a feat last achieved by Andy Roddick in 2003.

Despite Fritz's exit, several other American players remain in contention at Flushing Meadows. Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, and Tommy Paul have advanced to the second week, along with newcomer Alex Michelsen. Learner Tien and Michael Zheng are also competing.

Tiafoe, a Cincinnati Open finalist two weeks prior, is set to face Daniil Medvedev. Shelton, who won the Canadian Open, faces Stefanos Tsitsipas. Paul has a challenging match against Carlos Alcaraz.

Players have largely downplayed the significance of the long drought. "I can't tell you the last time I've thought about the American drought, other than being in these rooms," Shelton said previously when asked about the topic. "We have a defending champion this tournament. The player field has a lot of hot players right now."

The era once dominated by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, and now by Jannik Sinner and Alcaraz, has presented significant hurdles for American players. The current US Open draw, however, is seen by some as an opportunity for one of the remaining American hopefuls to break through.
