Goalkeeper Matt Freese acknowledged a "disappointment for my error in judgment" after a significant misplay contributed to a goal that extended Belgium's lead to 3-1 in the Round of 16 World Cup match. The United States ultimately lost the game 4-1.

During the second half, with the U.S. trailing by only one goal and showing positive momentum, Freese misplayed a ball outside his penalty area. His foot became stuck in the grass as he attempted to clear it, leading to a second touch that deflected off Belgian player Charles De Ketelaere. The ball then went to Hans Vanaken, who scored into an open net.

Freese explained that the proximity of De Ketelaere caused him to make a hasty decision. "I felt [De Ketelaere] so close, I thought he was going to kick my leg, and so I tried to get out of it," Freese stated. He expressed that the moment "hurts more than probably any other moment in my life."

Despite the personal disappointment, Freese voiced pride in his teammates and confidence in the future of the U.S. Soccer Federation. "I know the guys in front of me did everything they could today to get the win, and I'm so proud of them," he said. "But I know that this is a step in a longer journey, and I know that there's big things to come from this federation and from this group."

The match was broadcast on FOX and FOX Sports 1. Freese plays club soccer for New York City FC in Major League Soccer.
