Freddy Peralta Joins Elite Pitching Company with Historic Streak
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher achieves a pitching milestone only matched by two Hall of Famers in the last 114 years.
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Freddy Peralta has achieved a remarkable pitching feat, recording 10 consecutive starts with one run or fewer allowed. This streak, which dates back to the regular season and includes more than 50 innings pitched, has seen the Rays win all 10 of those games, according to Opta STATS.
Peralta's accomplishment places him in rare company, joining only Hall of Famers Bob Gibson (1968) and Walter Johnson (1913) as pitchers to have accomplished such a streak since 1913. Johnson's streak with the Washington Nationals, a franchise that later became the Minnesota Twins, predates the modern era of baseball.
Acquired by the Rays at the trade deadline, Peralta had a 4.99 ERA in 22 starts with his previous team. Since joining Tampa Bay, the 30-year-old pitcher went 5-2 in 10 regular-season starts with a 3.25 ERA and was named the American League's Pitcher of the Month for September. His dominance has continued into the postseason, where he holds a 1.08 ERA in 16 2/3 innings over four appearances, including three starts.
Peralta credited Rays pitching coach Kyle Snyder, bullpen coach Jorge Moncada, and bullpen catcher Charlie Valerio for his significant turnaround and success. "They helped me a lot," Peralta stated. "I can’t thank them enough because the way that they helped me is amazing, something I’m never going to forget in life."
The ALCS MVP is set to face the Milwaukee Brewers in the World Series, the team with whom he spent the first eight seasons of his career. "Milwaukee is a team and a city that gave me the opportunity to make my dream, and also Milwaukee is going to be always in my heart," Peralta said. "But this is a time to compete ... and excited to go."
Peralta is eligible for free agency this offseason. However, his immediate focus is on helping the Rays secure their first World Series title.
