Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman exited the team's game early Wednesday evening after a frightening fall down the dugout stairs. The incident occurred in the top of the eighth inning at Dodger Stadium as Freeman tracked a pop-up in foul territory.
Freeman lost his footing near the edge of the visiting dugout and fell down a flight of stairs. The scary moment immediately drew concern from teammates and opponents alike. Several Dodgers players and Kansas City Royals players went to check on the former MVP. The crowd at the ballpark appeared to hold its breath as Freeman was out of sight below the concrete overhang.
After several moments, Freeman re-emerged on his feet and, at least initially, seemed uninjured. He returned to his defensive position as crowd chants of "Fredd-ie! Fredd-ie!" erupted. Freeman played out the remainder of the inning.
Upon returning to the dugout, Freeman proceeded to the clubhouse, likely for further evaluation. He was replaced by a pinch hitter in the bottom of the eighth inning. No immediate details regarding the extent of any potential injuries were available following the game.
