Former Premier League Player Andros Townsend Run Over by Pitch Roller in Thailand Match
The ex-England international narrowly avoided serious injury during a halftime warm-up.
Former Tottenham and Everton winger Andros Townsend was involved in a bizarre incident during a match in Thailand when he was run over by a pitch roller while warming up at halftime. The 35-year-old, who joined PT Prachuap in the summer transfer window, was on the field when the vehicle reportedly struggled with control.
Footage of the incident showed Townsend kicking a ball and not looking in the direction of the approaching roller. The machine then made contact with the player, knocking him to the ground and passing over his legs and lower body. Spectators gasped at the scene. Despite the alarming nature of the incident, Townsend was able to walk away unharmed.
He later came on as a substitute in his team's 3-0 victory and shared a video of the accident on his Instagram page. PT Prachuap is based in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, approximately 150 miles south of Bangkok. The club had inadvertently appeared to confirm Townsend's arrival two weeks prior to his official signing by inquiring about housing for the player.
This marks the 17th club of Townsend's career. Last season, he made 29 appearances for Kanchanaburi Power, scoring three goals. His previous clubs include Tottenham, Newcastle, Crystal Palace, and Everton. He moved to Thailand after a brief stint with Turkish side Antalyaspor.
Before his move to Asia, Townsend worked as a co-commentator for ITV during the World Cup. He gained attention during the tournament for his unconventional diet, which includes consuming raw steak, sardines, and boiled eggs. Townsend stated that his aim was to maintain health while navigating hotel stays, limited cooking facilities, and the temptation of fast food, asserting, "Never let your circumstances dictate your health." He claims to have been following a raw meat diet for four years, even during his Premier League career when he had access to extensive dietary advice.
