Former Jackson State defensive back Levi Wyatt died Saturday, August 1, at the age of 23 following a two-vehicle car crash in Jackson, Mississippi. The Mississippi Capitol Police responded to the collision near the intersection of North State Street and Belhaven Street at approximately 12:14 a.m.

Officers found two damaged vehicles at the scene. Wyatt, who was driving a Chevrolet Camaro, left the roadway and struck a utility pole. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in Wyatt's vehicle was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was uninjured.

The Jackson State football program issued a statement mourning the loss of Wyatt. "The bond of this brotherhood does not end when the game clock expires," the statement read. "Today, we mourn the loss of our brother, Levi Wyatt." The program asked the "Tiger Nation" to keep Wyatt's family and loved ones in their prayers.

Wyatt transferred to Jackson State in 2025 from McNeese State, where he earned second-team All-Southland Conference honors in 2024. He played in all 12 games for Jackson State during the season, recording 12 tackles and four pass breakups, and helped the team win the SWAC East Division Championship. The Mississippi Capitol Police confirmed an active investigation into the crash is ongoing.

A family friend, Cara Payne Roberson, shared a statement on Facebook on behalf of Wyatt's family, requesting privacy and prayers. "With the permission of the family, I'm saddened to share that heaven gained an angel tonight. Levi Wyatt Jr. passed following an automobile accident," Roberson wrote. "As expected, at this time the family is in shock and completely heartbroken."
