Former Heavyweight Contender Denis Boytsov Dies Suddenly at 40

Denis Boytsov, a former world No. 2 heavyweight boxer who was once set to face Tyson Fury, has died at the age of 40. His death occurred suddenly this week after 11 years of ongoing care following a mysterious attack in 2015 that left him with severe head injuries and unable to speak.

Boytsov's father stated that the cause of death was a detached blood clot. "A blood clot broke off," Nikolai Boytsov told Russian news agency TASS. "There was nothing they could do; it was instant death. Three minutes and that was it."

In 2015, Boytsov suffered serious head injuries in a Berlin subway tunnel and was placed in a medically induced coma due to brain swelling. The perpetrators of the attack were never found. A statement on the boxer's website at the time suggested the incident may have been linked to his career, noting that Boytsov had been receiving constant threats approximately two years prior to the attack. His wife, Olga Litvinova, had expressed concerns that he might have been the victim of an attempted assassination.

Boytsov had a career record of 36 wins and 1 loss when his boxing activities were cut short. He was considered the world's second-best heavyweight behind Wladimir Klitschko at one point and had been scheduled to fight Tyson Fury in December 2012, a bout that did not materialize.

His brother, Maxim Boytsov, revealed that Denis had been unable to communicate verbally for the 11 years following the incident in Berlin. Boytsov received extensive treatment in Germany before returning to Russia for continued care. "No, we didn't communicate. He just nodded yes and no. But he understood everything," Maxim Boytsov said.

British former heavyweight boxer David Price, who had trained with Boytsov, commented on his power. "I sparred a Russian called Denis Boytsov in Germany once. He only hit the top of my head, but he was a powerful puncher," Price told the Daily Star. "I think he got his career cut short, he got absolutely battered and left for dead, he couldn't fight again. But I remember him being a really powerful puncher."

Boytsov's funeral was scheduled to take place on October 18, 2026, in the Oryol region of Russia.
