Floyd Samba's Brace Secures Manchester City Victory in Carabao Cup Debut

Seventeen-year-old Floyd Samba marked his Manchester City first-team debut with a brace, starring in the club's 5-0 Carabao Cup third-round thrashing of Norwich City on Thursday. The highly-rated teenager, promoted to the senior squad by new manager Enzo Maresca this summer, not only found the back of the net twice but also overshadowed the news surrounding another prodigious young talent, 15-year-old JJ Gabriel of Manchester United.

Samba, who joined City's academy at under-nine level, has been prolific for the club's youth sides. Last season, he scored 24 goals and provided 10 assists for the under-18 team, including a goal in the FA Youth Cup final victory against Manchester United in May. His transition to the first-team setup has been swift, with manager Maresca expressing satisfaction with his performance.

"I asked him in the last three, four days - when I decided to play him as nine - he said he never played there. He is not a nine for sure, but he was good," Maresca told BBC Radio 5 Live. "He is young, full of energy, strong, can finish, can set [players up]. I am happy but they are young and we have to go slowly, slowly. Hopefully we can give him more chances."

Samba himself described the experience as "mind-blowing," telling BBC Radio 5 Live, "I couldn't believe it myself - but that is just the beginning, I have got a big career ahead of me. It was a great debut." He credited the advice from his senior teammates for bolstering his confidence.

The Samba name carries Premier League pedigree, as Floyd is the son of former Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers defender Christopher Samba. The elder Samba played 171 top-flight matches and a further 12 in the Championship. Floyd's brother, Tyrone, is also part of the City youth setup. While his father was a towering centre-back, Floyd has emerged as a fleet-footed forward.

Former Norwich striker Chris Sutton commented on BBC Radio 5 Live that it was an "absolutely brilliant moment for Floyd. His dad was in the stadium and will be extremely proud. It's the journey, he has been nurtured at Man City, got his moment and what a night for him." Sutton added that Samba has given Maresca "food for thought moving forward" and that the manager can now "trust him a little bit more."
