Fleetwood Town Stuns Arsenal in Carabao Cup Upset
A team of unlikely heroes, including a former warehouse worker and a player once compared to Wayne Rooney, knocked out Premier League champions Arsenal on penalties.
Fleetwood Town achieved one of the most significant upsets in Carabao Cup history, eliminating Premier League champions Arsenal in a penalty shootout on Tuesday night. The victory came against a team ranked 83 places higher in the English football hierarchy.
The Fleetwood squad features players with diverse backgrounds, including a former warehouse worker, a promising young talent once dubbed 'the next Wayne Rooney', and individuals with past ties to Manchester United and Manchester City.
The Unlikely Heroes
Goalkeeper Jay Lynch, 33, a former warehouse worker, played a crucial role. Despite a past complaint about game time on Twitter, he organized Fleetwood's defense and saved a penalty from Bruno Guimaraes, setting the team on the path to victory. Lynch is reportedly friends with Jesse Lingard and Tommy Fury.
Defender Finley Potter, 22, played through an injury sustained in a recent match. He previously overcame an 18-month knee injury in his late teens.
Shaun Rooney, 30, a defender with a history of cup success, was part of two domestic trophy wins with St Johnstone in Scotland in 2021, even playing with an ankle injury and painkillers in one of those finals. He comes from a footballing family, with his great-uncle and great-grandfather also having played professionally.
Academy graduate Conor Haughey, 19, a Northern Ireland youth international, scored the winning penalty. He admitted to not having practiced penalties beforehand. Haughey holds the record as the youngest-ever player for Glentoran at 15 years, three months, and eight days old.
Rhys Bennett, 22, a former Manchester United academy graduate, played the full 90 minutes. He has spoken openly about the death of his father by suicide a year prior to the match.
Midfielder Harrison Neal, 25, was noted for a challenge that led to an Arsenal player receiving a red card. He was nicknamed 'Casper' during his time at Barrow, a reference to the character from the film 'Kes'.
Crispin McLean, 20, a Scottish player who was previously part of Celtic and Rangers' youth systems, signed his first professional contract with Fleetwood in 2024. He also enjoys playing padel.
Mark Helm, 25, another former Manchester United youth player, was once reportedly labeled 'the next Wayne Rooney'. He has stated a fear of snakes and identified pizza as his favorite food.
Jake Batty, 21, a wing-back who joined Fleetwood in the summer, previously played Sunday league football in Liverpool. He has also worked as a quad biker in the Egyptian desert.
Veteran striker Ched Evans, 37, has Premier League experience with Manchester City. He spent time out of football between 2012 and 2016 due to legal issues, later being found not guilty in a retrial.
Aaron Loupalo-Bi, 20, on loan from Fulham, scored the opening goal of the match against Arsenal. He has represented England at the under-18 level.
Manager Matt Lawlor, 38, admitted to being momentarily surprised by the match going to penalties. He previously had two caretaker spells with the League Two club before taking on the manager role permanently in January.
