Fitzroy River Venue for Brisbane 2032 Olympics Approved Despite Crocodile Population

The Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, Queensland, has been approved as the venue for rowing and canoeing events at the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games. The decision comes after an independent technical assessment concluded the river is suitable for competition, although the assessment did not take into account the approximately 500 saltwater crocodiles that inhabit the waterway.

The assessment focused on the course's performance under various conditions, including weather patterns, water levels, and flood risk, both during the Games and in the lead-up period. The report was commissioned by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA), which noted that the Fitzroy River Flatwater Facility is already utilized for various flatwater sports events, from school championships to national team training.

World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide, formerly the International Canoe Federation, have both endorsed the course based on the technical findings. World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland stated that the analysis provides confidence in the river's ability to offer fair competition conditions consistent with Olympic and Paralympic rowing requirements. Thomas Konietzko, President of Paddle Worldwide, echoed this sentiment, indicating that the technical work has improved understanding of the playing field and assures athletes of fair competition for canoe sprint events.

Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris previously addressed concerns about wildlife by comparing the situation to surfing with sharks in the ocean. He emphasized a "can do" mindset and stated that the venue's endorsement provides certainty for future planning and delivery of the Games, ensuring that all design and operational work remains focused on Rockhampton.

Saltwater crocodiles, locally known as 'Salties,' are capable of living in both fresh and saltwater environments and can reach lengths exceeding six meters.
