Fitzpatrick Expresses Unease Over Dubai as DP World Tour Championship Venue

Defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick has stated he is not "100% comfortable" with the possibility of competing in Dubai for the DP World Tour Championship in November, citing concerns over potential conflict in the region. The United Arab Emirates has been a location of concern due to ongoing tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel.

Fitzpatrick pointed to a hotel incident earlier this year, noting that he had dined at the same establishment, which amplified his unease. "That's obviously very scary when you think about how it was a few months away but how close you were to that particular spot and for something like that to happen," he told BBC Sport.

He suggested that relocating the event would be a "no brainer," but acknowledged that as a player, he does not make the financial decisions. "I'm sure there's more to it than just the meets the eye," Fitzpatrick added.

DP World Tour officials, led by chief executive Guy Kinnings, are currently evaluating safety protocols for the tour's final two playoff events in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. These tournaments are significant for the tour, offering substantial prize money for leading players at the season's close.

Fitzpatrick described the situation as "annoying" but recognized that tour officials cannot control international events. "It is frustrating because as someone who likes to plan and be prepared, it is difficult to kind of figure out what's going on," he said. "Obviously, things as they stand are a bit weird over there."

Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry commented on the gravity of the decisions facing the tour. "They are huge decisions for everyone," Lowry said. "I think if the tournaments are on, the players are going to go. And if they are not, they will find an alternative."

A spokesperson for the DP World Tour confirmed they are in communication with members regarding tournament safety. "As far as our play-offs are concerned, it remains our intention to play as scheduled in the UAE but we continue to monitor the situation and take advice from our international travel advisors," the spokesperson stated. The tour reiterated that individual players ultimately decide their schedules.
