Fitzpatrick Expresses Discomfort with Middle East Finale Amid Regional Conflicts

Matt Fitzpatrick, the defending champion of the DP World Tour's season finale, has voiced his discomfort regarding the tour's plans to hold the final two events of the year in the Middle East due to ongoing regional conflicts. Fitzpatrick stated that his perspective has shifted, particularly since becoming a father in August, making him less inclined to travel to the region for the tournaments scheduled for November.

The Race to Dubai is set to conclude with the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. However, the location of these events remains uncertain as the DP World Tour has yet to make a final decision.

"Being completely honest as things stand right now, I would say I’m not that comfortable," Fitzpatrick told reporters ahead of the BMW PGA Championship in England. He added that his recent fatherhood has significantly altered his considerations regarding travel.

Fitzpatrick expressed skepticism about his personal opinion carrying significant weight with tour decision-makers. "I know I’ve been asked on my opinion, but I don’t necessarily think it’s like a heavy weight," he said. He also noted that opinions among fellow players are divided, with some sharing his unease and others finding the prospect acceptable.

Fitzpatrick's agent was informed that a decision on the playoff events' location would be made by June, but as of mid-September, no definitive announcement has been issued. This lack of clarity complicates planning for players. The DP World Tour holds considerable leverage, with the two events offering purses of $9 million and $10 million, respectively. The Race to Dubai champion also stands to win a $2 million bonus.

Fitzpatrick, currently ranked third in the world, won the 2025 DP World Tour Championship by defeating Rory McIlroy in a playoff. The planned events in Abu Dhabi and Dubai are scheduled to begin on November 5 and the following week, respectively.
