Multiple SC Cambuur fans sustained injuries, including burns and eye damage, after Feyenoord supporters launched fireworks during a Dutch Eredivisie match on Sunday.
Feyenoord secured a 5-2 victory over SC Cambuur in Leeuwarden, but the win was marred by the actions of some Feyenoord fans. "Frustration prevails too much for that," said Feyenoord's general manager Robert Eenhoorn, who expressed dissatisfaction with the situation. "This problem obviously does not only affect Feyenoord and is unfortunately something we have been unable to put a stop to for decades."
Eenhoorn stated that discussions will be held with all stakeholders, including clubs, the KNVB (Dutch football association), and authorities, to find a resolution.
Leeuwarden mayor Foort van Oosten condemned the incident and initiated an investigation. The Dutch football association has also announced it will review its existing protocols for managing disorder during matches. Jan Bluyssen, the KNVB's manager of professional football competition affairs, told Dutch news agency ANP that the protocol needs examination to determine if it remains appropriate and how it might be adjusted.
The match continued despite the injuries to fans. However, officials noted that the game would have been abandoned had a player or match official been affected by the fireworks.
