Fifa has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Argentina concerning their conduct during and after the World Cup final match against Spain. The investigation will assess behavior displayed by multiple Argentina players and backroom staff.
According to reports, a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor was appointed to review incidents that occurred following the final whistle. These incidents involved altercations with Spain players. Argentina lost the final to Spain 1-0.
On the recommendation of the prosecutor, Fifa will investigate Argentina players Nahuel Molina and Leandro Paredes, as well as assistant coach Roberto Ayala. Molina is being investigated on two counts, Paredes on three counts, and Ayala on one count. The charges relate to alleged assault under article 14 of Fifa's disciplinary code.
Molina may also face further disciplinary action for a separate count of alleged unsporting behavior, also under article 14. Team-mate Thiago Almada and Spain midfielder Gavi are facing similar accusations of unsporting conduct.
Under Fifa's disciplinary code, players and officials can face a minimum of a one-match suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct. Assault charges carry a minimum suspension of three matches.
