FIFA Generated $5 Billion From 2026 World Cup Ticket Sales, Report Says
The figure significantly surpassed FIFA's projections and has drawn criticism from fan groups over alleged "extortionate" pricing.
FIFA generated approximately $5 billion from ticket and hospitality sales during the 2026 World Cup, held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, according to a report by Martyn Ziegler of The Times. This revenue stream far exceeded FIFA's initial estimate of $3.3 billion for the tournament and contributed to the World Cup's overall revenues of $15 billion.
The reported $5 billion figure represents a substantial increase compared to the previous World Cup in Qatar, where FIFA's ticket and hospitality revenue was $929 million. While the 2026 tournament featured 40 additional matches, the report attributes a significant portion of the revenue increase to FIFA's implementation of dynamic pricing strategies and a 30 percent cut of secondary market sales through its own resale platform.
Fan organizations have voiced strong criticism regarding the pricing, with Football Supporters Europe labeling the elevated costs a "monumental betrayal" and fans branding them "scandalous" and "extortionate." These prices were levied against fans already facing significant expenses for travel and accommodation.
FIFA did not officially confirm the $5 billion figure when approached by The Times. A spokesperson for the organization stated that revenues generated from the tournament are intended to fund increased financial support for FIFA's 211 member associations. The spokesperson highlighted that over 100,000 tickets were made available for $60 or less, including more than 1,000 for the final match.
"The revenues generated by the tournament will provide unprecedented resources for FIFA's member associations to invest in the game," the spokesperson said, referencing a proposed FIFA Surplus Solidarity Programme that would aim to more than double planned funding for the 2027-2030 period to $6.35 billion using a portion of FIFA's reserves. FIFA plans to publish the complete financial figures for the 2026 World Cup in its upcoming annual report, following requisite audit processes.
