A public disagreement has emerged between Juju Chan, fiancée of PGA Tour player Sahith Theegala, and ESPN SportsCenter anchor Gary Striewski regarding an interaction at a coffee shop during the Travelers Championship. The dispute centers on Striewski's retelling of a brief encounter and Chan's subsequent public response.
According to Striewski, he encountered Chan at a coffee shop and, recognizing her from her social media presence, asked her, "Has anyone spotted you yet?" He described the interaction as "weird" in a social media video, stating he understood people wanting privacy but found it unusual for someone active on social media to react negatively to recognition.
Chan, who has a significant following on Instagram and TikTok, offered a different perspective. She called Striewski "extremely unprofessional" and accused him of fabricating a false narrative. In a TikTok video, Chan stated that while she felt uncomfortable with his comment, she tried to laugh it off. She asserted that the interaction did not happen as Striewski described and that his public recounting of the three-second exchange was an attempt to encourage negativity towards her.
"I think it's extremely unprofessional, given the line of work that he's in, to bring this three-second interaction to the internet and to encourage people to hate on me," Chan said in her video.
Theegala also commented on Chan's post, expressing his support and pride in how she handled the situation. "That guy should have never put you in a position like this," Theegala wrote. "I love you so much and I’m incredibly proud of how you’ve handled it my queen. I see how kind and caring you are to all that interact with you and the people close to us know your real, incredible self."
The incident has been characterized by some observers as a minor dispute, particularly during the slower sports news period of summer.
