Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White has admitted to feeling "frustration" over the ongoing controversy surrounding player Sophie Cunningham's comments on transgender athletes, which has diverted attention from the team's performance. Despite the distractions, the Fever have maintained a strong record, currently standing at 19-10.

White stated that she does not "believe that exclusion is an answer" when discussing the issue, drawing from her own experience of playing with boys during her youth. Cunningham, however, has publicly advocated for barring transgender girls and women from female sports, stating in a recent interview that girls "shouldn’t have to go against biological men."

Cunningham's remarks have ignited a firestorm, leading to protests both for and against her views. On July 28, a pro-Cunningham rally took place outside Climate Pledge Arena during the Fever's game against the Seattle Storm. Cunningham was booed by the Seattle crowd, and Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton was later suspended for five games by the WNBA for an exchange with Cunningham's fans.

Following the Fever's 105-95 victory over the Storm, a representative for the Fever stated that neither Cunningham nor the organization had any knowledge of or contact with the rally organizers. Later, during a game against the Portland Fire, fans again rallied outside the Moda Center, and Cunningham was booed inside the arena.

Despite the persistent attention, Cunningham has maintained that she is unconcerned about the distractions. "At the end of the day, I come in and I do my job," Cunningham said. She added that those who know her personally see her as "full of love" and committed to inspiring the next generation positively. She affirmed her commitment to "be me" and not to "shadow that or hide or, you know, dim my light just because maybe people don’t agree with that."

Cunningham also stated that she has had no involvement with the protestors but supports their right to freedom of speech, calling them "competent and be bold and courageous enough to speak their truths."

White acknowledged that dealing with such controversies is part of the league's growth. "We have to be able to insulate as much as we can, and then we have to be able to lead with conversation," she said. The Fever are scheduled to play the Minnesota Lynx in Minneapolis, where a third rally is reportedly planned.
