Arthur Fery's US Open debut concluded in the first round with a defeat against 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti. The British player, who had reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon earlier in the year, was unable to carry that momentum to New York.
Museetti secured a 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 victory. Fery, ranked world number 33, was not seeded at the US Open. He faced Musetti, a talented player who had reached the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows the previous year but missed the last two majors due to a thigh injury.
This marked Fery's second appearance at an overseas Grand Slam, following his debut at the Australian Open in January. The match was delayed by rain on the third day of the tournament and played in hot and humid conditions.
Fery, who had gained significant confidence from his Wimbledon performance and reaching his first ATP Tour final at the Winston-Salem Open, was competing on Grandstand, the third-largest court at the US Open. He wore earplugs during changeovers, a tactic he employed at Wimbledon to maintain focus amidst crowd noise.
Despite Fery's efforts, Musetti proved to be a consistent opponent, minimizing errors and capitalizing on opportunities to secure the win.
