Fernandes Shines in Spurs' Stamford Bridge Victory

Mateus Fernandes' performance in Tottenham's recent victory at Stamford Bridge marked a significant milestone in his career with the club. Expectations were high following his club-record £85 million transfer from West Ham in July, a fee reflecting his considerable potential.

Fernandes, who had previously experienced successive relegations with Southampton and West Ham, faced a different environment at Tottenham, a club with higher ambitions. Manager Roberto De Zerbi acknowledged the midfielder's need to adapt to a larger club's surroundings. "We pushed together to bring him. We are convinced of his qualities," De Zerbi stated. "He has to stay with a calm head, have confidence and enjoy himself on the pitch. Enjoy it with the ball, show his qualities because he will be one of the most important players of Tottenham for the future. For the present and the future."

Despite his talent, Fernandes' integration was not immediate. He was substituted at halftime in a previous 3-2 defeat against Aston Villa, with De Zerbi expressing a need for more from the player. Following that match, Fernandes missed training for the birth of his son and was overlooked for a subsequent game, even with a midfield absence due to suspension. De Zerbi opted for a tactical shift at the time, deploying different midfielders.

However, against Chelsea, Fernandes was restored to a deep central midfield role. Although an early mistake led to a chance for Chelsea's Cole Palmer, resulting in a save from goalkeeper Toni Kinsky, Fernandes grew in confidence throughout the match. He and teammate Sandro Tonali controlled the midfield against Chelsea's Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson, showcasing the power and energy expected when Spurs invested heavily in the pair.

De Zerbi also praised captain Micky van de Ven and the wingers Mo Kudus and Mathys Tel for their contributions to the victory. The match also featured a notable flashpoint in the 72nd minute when Fernandes committed a cynical handball to prevent a dangerous counter-attack by Cole Palmer, leading to a confrontation and yellow cards for both players. Palmer later received a second yellow card, leading to his dismissal.

Despite the incident, De Zerbi commended Fernandes' overall performance. "I love watching my players fighting on the pitch," he said. "But Mateus Fernandes played 90 minutes with a big, big quality. I want to see him with personality. I want to see him enjoy with the ball. Even if he makes a mistake, it doesn't matter. It's not a problem, a mistake. But I want to see this personality from my team."
