Falkirk Hands Celtic Sixth Defeat in Ten Matches, O'Neill Under Pressure
Scott Bain's outstanding performance in goal denies Celtic as Falkirk secures their first win over the Bhoys since 2007.
Celtic's struggles continued as they suffered a 2-0 defeat against Falkirk, marking their sixth loss in the last ten matches. The pressure on manager Martin O'Neill intensified following a performance that saw Falkirk score early and hold firm, with former Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain making a series of crucial saves.
Falkirk took the lead in the third minute through Ethan Ross, capitalizing on a defensive error by Cameron Carter-Vickers. Scott Tanser doubled Falkirk's advantage in the 38th minute, leaving Celtic with a significant deficit. Bain was a formidable presence throughout the match, making ten saves to thwart Celtic's attacking efforts and secure Falkirk's first victory over the Glasgow giants since 2007.
The champions remain at the top of the William Hill Premiership, but their lead is now just four points, and they have played a game more than second-placed Rangers. Falkirk's win propelled them to fourth in the table, extending their own winning streak to four consecutive matches.
Celtic made several changes to their lineup. Carter-Vickers returned after an injury layoff, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was handed his first start in two months, and Haissem Hassan was recalled to the wing. Falkirk's attacking strategy saw Camilo Duran lead the line, with Danish striker Kasper Hogh coming on for the final 25 minutes but having limited impact.
Falkirk's opening goal stemmed from a long ball that Celtic's defense struggled to control. Ryan Strain's cross was inadvertently directed into Ross's path by Carter-Vickers. The early momentum for Falkirk was tempered by an injury to Strain, who was replaced by Jack McMillan at right-back.
On-loan Derby winger Owen Eames was instrumental in Falkirk's attack, creating chances on the left wing. He assisted Tanser's goal after a pass into the box. Falkirk also hit the post through Duran, and Bain was forced into several saves before halftime, denying Duran three times and Hassan once.
In the second half, Falkirk had a goal disallowed by VAR after Jacob Murrell appeared to handle the ball before it went in. Despite halftime substitutions by O'Neill, including the introduction of James Forrest, Celtic could not break down Falkirk's defense. Bain continued his impressive form, making a double save from Forrest and substitute Benjamin Nygren, which drew chants of "Scotland's number one" from the home crowd. Further saves from Bain denied Forrest again, and Finn Yeats blocked a shot from Nygren. Late efforts from Liam Scales, Nygren, and Mika Baur all went wide or were saved as Celtic's frustration grew.
