The Atlanta Falcons' anticipated quarterback competition has been hampered by injuries to both Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. shortly after the start of training camp.
Tagovailoa, acquired in the offseason to compete with Penix Jr. for the starting role, experienced a "flare-up" of an undisclosed injury, new head coach Kevin Stefanski announced. ESPN reported the injury to be a tight back. Stefanski expressed optimism that Tagovailoa will return to practice soon.
Meanwhile, Penix Jr. continues to recover from a torn ACL sustained last season. He has been observed participating in individual drills and 7-on-7 work but has not yet joined full team activities. Penix acknowledged his history of injuries, stating a cautious approach to his recovery. "The last thing I want to do is rush back just to get back on the field," he said, emphasizing the seriousness of his third ACL injury.
To add depth to the quarterback position, the Falcons signed veteran backup Cooper Rush. The team previously released Trevor Siemian. With Tagovailoa sidelined and Penix Jr. not yet cleared for full participation, undrafted rookie free agent Jack Strand is currently the only healthy quarterback on the roster.
Stefanski acknowledged the challenges of managing injuries, even early in camp. The uncertainty at the quarterback position adds to the intrigue surrounding the Falcons' season under a new coaching staff, which includes former quarterback Matt Ryan as team president of football operations. The team has not made the playoffs since 2017 and has not recorded a .500 or better season since that year.
