The Atlanta Falcons are navigating significant roster challenges heading into Week 1 of the NFL season, with wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus designated as the emergency quarterback and running back due to a string of injuries.

Quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. have both been ruled out for the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tagovailoa sustained an oblique injury midweek, while Penix Jr. is still recovering from a knee injury sustained last year. This leaves third-stringer Cooper Rush as the starter, with undrafted rookie Jack Strand as his backup.

Further complicating matters, Rush experienced back spasms on Saturday, adding to the team's concerns. As a result, Zaccheaus, primarily a wide receiver, has been named the emergency third-string quarterback. Should both active quarterbacks be unable to play, Zaccheaus would be called upon to fill the role.

Adding to the emergency measures, Zaccheaus is also slated to serve as the emergency third-string running back. With starting running back Bijan Robinson and backup Brian Robinson being the team's only active ball carriers, Zaccheaus is the fallback option if further injuries occur at that position.

Zaccheaus has a prior history playing multiple positions, having played running back and defensive back in high school before transitioning to wide receiver at the University of Virginia. He joined the Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and has since established a role on the team. He returned to Atlanta in the offseason on a two-year, $4.5 million contract after playing for the Chicago Bears last season, following stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders.

Starting quarterback Cooper Rush is also a new addition to the Falcons, having signed a one-year deal after playing for the Baltimore Ravens last season. Rush has previous starting experience in the NFL, including 14 starts with the Dallas Cowboys, where he holds a 9-7 career record. In 2024, he went 4-4 as a starter for the Cowboys while Dak Prescott was injured.

Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski has expressed confidence in Rush, advising him to "be yourself. Operate the offense. Get the ball out quickly to your playmakers." Stefanski also noted his anticipation of seeing Bijan Robinson play in a live game, describing Robinson as "a pro's pro" who knows how to prepare and operate an offense.
