Ex-Tottenham Defender Ramon Vega to Run for FIFA Presidency

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega has announced his intention to stand as a candidate in the upcoming FIFA presidential election. Vega, a 55-year-old ex-center-back who also played for Celtic and Watford, stated his aim is to "reunite the global football family, deliver genuine and lasting reform, modernise Fifa for the 21st Century, restore stability and credibility, and rebuild the trust that our game urgently needs."

Vega's announcement comes as current FIFA president Gianni Infantino faces calls to step down following backlash over a proposed plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors. Infantino has publicly stated he is "fully committed to leading FIFA."

This is not the first time Vega has considered a run for FIFA's top position. He contemplated running in 2015 after the suspension of then-president Sepp Blatter. Four years later, he indicated an intention to challenge Infantino but did not secure the necessary backing from five member federations to be included in the ballot.

In his statement, Vega emphasized that football belongs to its participants and fans, not administrators. "Football is in the emergency room, on life support," he said. "We cannot wait any longer. Fifa needs a new direction and fundamental reform. We must reunite the football family, restore trust, bring stability and modernise Fifa's governance. This requires decisive change - not cosmetic adjustments."

Vega retired from professional football in 2004 and has since worked in finance. He is the first individual to publicly confirm their candidacy to challenge Infantino in the next election.
