Erling Haaland, known for his formidable goal-scoring prowess and imposing physical presence, has adopted a playful approach during Norway's World Cup campaign, a strategy that also serves to highlight his significant threat on the field.

Haaland, who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 205 pounds, has been described as a player who eats 6,000 calories a day and scores goals with the efficiency of Pac-Man. His off-field persona, which includes shopping for cowboy boots and sharing parts of his life on YouTube, is part of an effort to build a household name in America.

Despite Norway's underdog status and its last World Cup appearance in 1998, Haaland has emerged as a pivotal figure. The team has reached the quarter-finals, a significant achievement after never having won a knockout game prior to this year's tournament. Haaland views this as a moment to be enjoyed. "It's important to joke around, I think," Haaland said. "I think every one of you kind of ‘know me’ now that I like to joke around a little bit and to have fun. I think that’s a key for my daily life, to joke around and of course train good, focus and prepare well. You also need to joke around. You need to enjoy the moment."

Norway faces England in an upcoming match, with Haaland acknowledging England as a favorite. "I think there are some clear favorites out there," he stated. "England’s one of them. I think all of you [reporters] should put every single pressure on the English lads."

Haaland's effectiveness is undeniable, despite his team manager, Ståle Solbakken, noting that Haaland's hunger for goals is most apparent during training sessions and matches. "When he trains, when he participates, he is hungry for goals," Solbakken said. "But on a couple of the training sessions, he hasn’t been all that hungry."

This observation aligns with Haaland's approach during the Round of 16 match against Brazil, a 2-1 victory for Norway. He had only 30 touches of the ball but scored two crucial goals. His first goal came after a precise run, transforming from a seemingly disengaged player into a powerful force.

Across four seasons with Manchester City, Haaland has scored 162 goals in 198 appearances. His scoring rate in the Premier League last season averaged one goal every 110 minutes. During Norway's undefeated World Cup qualifying campaign, he averaged a goal every 44 minutes, scoring 16 times in eight games. In the current World Cup, he has scored seven goals, placing him among the top contenders for the Golden Boot, trailing Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé by one goal going into Saturday's matches.

His Manchester City teammate, Nico O’Reilly, described Haaland as a constant threat. "Erling is Erling," O’Reilly said. "We all know what he is like. He can score goals and is dangerous in the box. He is a real threat. They need to get him the ball."
