Erik ten Hag Criticizes Pundits for 'Protecting Legacies' and Lacking Insight
Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag believes ex-players turned pundits often don't understand the current club dynamics.
Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has stated that ex-players who become pundits often do not fully understand the current goings-on at the club and are motivated by protecting their own legacies. Ten Hag, who managed United for two-and-a-half years before his dismissal in October 2024, faced criticism from former club stars like Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand during his tenure.
Ten Hag expressed respect for the achievements of these former players but emphasized that their commentary can affect current players. "It's everywhere the same, they always want to protect their legacies," Ten Hag told The Athletic. "Football evolves. For United, it's clear: they had great contributions, they achieved massive results, trophies for the club and for themselves, so I respect them."
He noted that while he had good relationships with figures like Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand, their public platforms, such as podcasts and YouTube channels, can be difficult for players. "Sometimes it's difficult for players. Some of them get affected by it, get annoyed by it," he said. Ten Hag suggested these former players could offer more support to the club and its current players, adding, "But I think always the thing you most love, you most criticise."
During his time at Old Trafford, Ten Hag led Manchester United to Carabao Cup victory in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. He also oversaw third and eighth-place finishes in the Premier League over his two full seasons. Prior to the 2024 FA Cup final, Ten Hag had previously criticized English pundits for what he perceived as sensationalism and an easy target at Manchester United, England's biggest club. "The pundits in England want to score, they want to show they are worth the money, and for that Manchester United is an easy prey," he stated before the match.
He contrasted the current media environment with the previous year, where he felt lauded. "These same people were the ones who gave me a pat on the back last year. Last year I was able to walk on water, this year I am the worst manager in the Premier League." Ten Hag also had a notable exchange with Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer on the BBC following the FA Cup win.
Despite the FA Cup triumph leading to a contract extension, Ten Hag was dismissed in October 2024 with the team in 14th place in the Premier League standings.
