Michael Chandler, the bus driver for the England national team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, wrote a four-page poem for the squad following their semi-final exit. England star Jude Bellingham shared the poem, titled "Lions Way," on his Instagram account, stating it captured his emotions during their time in Kansas.
Bellingham, who scored six goals in the tournament, described the poem as hitting "the nail on the head" regarding the team's experience. The poem emphasizes mental resilience, self-control, and squad unity when facing adversity on the pitch. It opens with the lines: "The Lion does not boast aloud, or chase the praise of every crowd. He knows the roar that shakes the night is born when fear is met with might."
Chandler also shared his thoughts on an England fans Facebook page, expressing his admiration for the team and urging the country to welcome them home with love and devotion. He called the team an "awesome representation of what true honor looks like" and noted their attitude, fortitude, and humbleness.
"I've been humbled to be their team driver through the ups and downs," Chandler wrote. "Never once did they waver from being stellar gentleman."
He explained that his experience driving the England team inspired him to document their matches through poetry. He felt compelled to give his final poem to Bellingham, who in turn honored him by posting it publicly. Chandler stated that the players exemplified humbleness and grace throughout both victories and losses, calling them "truest examples of what honor looks like."
