England Women's Rugby Team Defeats United States, but Questions Remain

England's Red Roses secured a return to winning ways by defeating the United States in New Jersey, though the match revealed lingering questions about their dominance in women's rugby. Despite the 55-12 victory, the performance has given head coach John Mitchell much to consider ahead of the Women's Six Nations title defense in April.

Wing Claudia Moloney-MacDonald was a standout performer, scoring four tries. Her first two came early in the match, the second a result of a mis-pass from fly-half Holly Aitchison. While the United States, ranked sixth, proved more resilient than in their previous World Cup encounter with England, they ultimately could not match the Red Roses' offensive capabilities.

The United States showed flashes of determination, with Alev Kelter delivering a powerful hit on England captain Meg Jones that rallied her team. The hosts also managed to breach England's defense for two tries, the second coming from Kate Zackary on the final play of the match, a score that encapsulated their fighting spirit.

Despite the win, England struggled at times with their set-piece solidity and attacking fluency. They encountered difficulties at the line-out early on, unable to effectively utilize their rolling maul from promising positions. The scrum also came under pressure, with England's Maud Muir being penalized in a contest with experienced US prop Hope Rogers.

The United States capitalized on England's set-piece issues, with Rogers scoring a short-range try. England regained a ten-point lead before halftime through Jones's score, but statistics at the break indicated the United States had enjoyed more territory and possession. Moloney-MacDonald's third and fourth tries shortly after halftime extended England's lead, making the outcome secure.

England's depth and endurance eventually told, with substitutes like Hannah Botterman and Ellie Kildunne making impacts. However, the United States demonstrated impressive energy throughout the match. Even with a player in the sin bin for a scrum infringement, their resistance and physicality remained high, culminating in Zackary's late try.

The match took place at the 25,000-capacity Sports Illustrated Stadium. Organizers will be looking to provide a more polished platform for the Women's Rugby World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in the United States in 2033.
