England Women's Rugby Head Coach Sees Positives in Drawn Match Against Canada

Head coach John Mitchell stated that England's draw against Canada in the WXV Global Series will ultimately lead to "greater things to come" for the world champions. The result, a thrilling contest that ended England's record-breaking winning streak, has been viewed as a learning opportunity.

"There was such good stuff in there," Mitchell said. "I'm very patient because we're just starting and we're still alive in this Test series. I'm a realist. There will be greater things come as a result of this. There's a greater purpose and one Test match is not going to take us away from our purpose."

The match mirrored the opening stages of last year's World Cup final between the two teams, with Canada scoring first and England quickly responding. However, unlike their previous encounter where England secured a 33-13 victory, this time they were unable to maintain control.

The two teams were closely matched throughout the game, with the lead never extending beyond a single try. England was unable to capitalize on a sustained period of pressure, failing to convert their dominance into decisive points.

Captain Meg Jones acknowledged that the team would need to review their "game management" but praised the quality of the contest. "It was definitely tit for tat and definitely a game of momentum swinging," Jones commented. "It was two good teams going at each other. It was an amazing contest and competitive as we imagined. This is the first Test. We get another two shots at it [against Canada]."
