England's Striker Conundrum: Searching for Harry Kane's Successor

Harry Kane, England's all-time top scorer and appearance maker, continues to perform at a high level, but with the striker approaching 35 by the 2028 European Championship, questions about his eventual replacement are mounting. Manager Thomas Tuchel acknowledged the difficulty, stating, "You will not get another Harry Kane, first of all. We look for different options and solutions."

One potential candidate identified by Tuchel is Jude Bellingham. The Real Madrid star has significantly increased his goal-scoring output for England since the 2026 World Cup, netting 10 times in 12 matches, a stark contrast to his six goals in the 48 games prior. "I like him as a nine," Tuchel commented, highlighting Bellingham's natural goal-scoring instincts and hunger for decisive actions. Bellingham's role at Real Madrid, where he has operated as a false nine, further supports the argument for his versatility. This ability to bridge the No. 9 and No. 10 positions mirrors Kane's playmaking and finishing prowess. With a wealth of attacking midfielders like Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Eberechi Eze available, England has options to fill the void should Bellingham shift to a more advanced role.

However, not all agree on Bellingham as a direct replacement. Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson argued that Bellingham operates best by playing off other attackers, rather than as an out-and-out number nine.

Natural Centre-Forward Options

In terms of natural centre-forwards, England's depth is currently limited. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has shown promise with 17 goals in 40 Premier League appearances for Leeds United since his transfer last summer. However, questions linger about his consistency, and at 29, he is not a long-term solution. Other English strikers with Premier League goals this season include Nottingham Forest's Liam Delap and Ipswich Town's Chuba Akpom, both with one goal. Notably, English left-backs have scored more goals in the 2026-27 season than English centre-forwards.

Veteran Danny Welbeck's 13 Premier League goals last season came too late in his career, and at 35, he is unlikely to be a future option. Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins, previously considered, are now in their thirties and playing in the Saudi Pro League, having been omitted from recent squads.

Tactical Flexibility

England could also adapt tactically, potentially foregoing a traditional striker. Thomas Tuchel has previously employed Kai Havertz as a centre-forward at Chelsea, where he scored 10 goals in 33 league games in that role. Spain's success with converted wingers like Mikel Oyarzabal and Ferran Torres as strikers offers another model. Anthony Gordon, who impressed with three goals during the recent international break, could also be deployed in a more advanced role, having shown success as a striker for Newcastle United last season.

Emerging Talents

Several young strikers are showing significant potential. Aston Villa's 17-year-old Brian Madjo scored five pre-season goals, including one against Paris Saint-Germain, before an injury sidelined him. He is nearing a return to first-team action. In the Championship, 21-year-old Will Lankshear, a Tottenham academy graduate like Kane, has scored eight goals in 11 appearances for Middlesbrough. Manchester City's Divin Mubama, on loan at Southampton, has five goals in 10 European Under-21 Championship qualifiers. Other promising young forwards include Bristol City's Dom Ballard and Millwall's Josh Coburn.

Harry Kane himself has drawn inspiration from Lionel Messi's longevity, suggesting he could continue playing at the highest level for some time. "As you see on the other end with Leo there, he's still performing at the highest level," Kane remarked. This longevity could allow emerging talents more time to develop, potentially easing the transition when Kane's era eventually concludes.
