England midfielder Jordan Henderson sustained a severe injury to his left forearm during a post-match celebration following the team's World Cup victory over Mexico. His father, Brian Henderson, revealed that his son had "completely smashed it" and would require a cast.
Despite the injury, which necessitated a stretcher and oxygen following his fall, Henderson plans to stay with the England squad for the remainder of the World Cup rather than returning home. The incident occurred as Henderson vaulting back over advertising boards after his teammates had sung Oasis's "Wonderwall" in front of fans.
Brian Henderson recounted watching the event unfold, initially believing his son had only suffered a minor fall. "At first I just thought he’d fallen," he told the Daily Mail. "I thought he’d maybe scraped his wrist. I had no idea it was that serious until they were interviewing Harry Kane and a trolley came past with Jordan on it. I could see him on there with oxygen and things."
Henderson was attended to by training staff and subsequently transported to a Mexico City hospital. He has had limited playing time during the tournament, logging six minutes in England's Group Stage win against Panama and did not play in the match against Mexico.
England is scheduled to face Norway in the semifinals on Saturday.
