England midfielder Jordan Henderson sustained a wrist injury during a post-match celebration following the team's 3-2 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16. The incident occurred Sunday night at the Estadio Azteca as the team celebrated with supporters.
While Oasis's "Wonderwall" played over the stadium's sound system, Henderson attempted to jump over a dasher board and fell awkwardly onto the pitch. Medical staff were quickly summoned by a teammate to attend to him.
England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed the injury, stating that Henderson had been taken to a local hospital for assessment. "He's at the moment in the hospital, so it's quite a serious injury," Tuchel said. "It just doesn't fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. I don’t know the procedure [that’s] going on."
Tuchel described his emotions as "very mixed," feeling pride in the team's performance but sadness over Henderson's injury. The manager learned of the situation from the team's doctors while fulfilling media obligations.
The injury was also noted during the Fox broadcast, with player Harry Kane commenting that Henderson had "just fell over there." Kane appeared more optimistic about Henderson's condition prior to Tuchel's press conference.
It remains unclear how long Henderson might be sidelined, particularly given the description of the injury's severity. He has made one appearance for England during the current World Cup, playing the final six minutes of their group stage win against Panama. He also received a yellow card for sideline conduct during Sunday's match.
