England defender Jarell Quansah has been handed a two-match suspension by FIFA's disciplinary committee for a red card offense during a recent match against Mexico. The ban stems from a 54th-minute tackle on Jesus Gallardo that was classified as serious foul play.
This classification resulted in an additional match suspension on top of the automatic one-game ban. Quansah will now miss England's quarter-final match against Norway and a potential semi-final clash. He would be available for selection only if England advances to the final on July 19.
The Football Association (FA) is reportedly in strong communication with FIFA regarding the disciplinary process. Sources indicate the FA argued that showing the referee a still image and slow-motion replays before the real-time incident on the pitchside screen may have led to "outcome bias." In contrast, Premier League officials are generally shown incidents at full speed first.
Despite the FA's representations, the ban is not appealable under tournament regulations. The suspension presents a challenge for head coach Thomas Tuchel, particularly at right-back. Quansah had been filling in for the injured Reece James, who is expected to be available for the Norway game after recovering from a hamstring injury.
Assistant coach Anthony Barry described the news as "disappointing," acknowledging the loss of a key player. Winger Bukayo Saka echoed this sentiment, calling the ban "incredibly frustrating" but emphasizing the team's need to adapt and focus on the upcoming match against Norway.
