England's World Cup semifinal berth has been met with sharp criticism from American television pundits, who described the team's performance against Norway as "really poor" and "unconvincing." Despite securing a 2-1 extra-time victory on Saturday night, analyst Mike Grella of CBS Sports likened the team to "the world's ugliest daughter" whose beauty is praised despite its perceived flaws.

Grella stated on CBS Sports that while England has two games remaining in the tournament, their ability to win the World Cup for the first time since 1966 is questionable due to their perceived lack of skill. "You're not good with the ball, you're not good at transitions, you leave unbelievable spaces in between the lines," Grella commented. "By English standards, it was a really poor performance. The impressive part is how poor you are and you're able to get away with the win."

Jude Bellingham was the hero for England, scoring both goals to come from behind against Norway. He leveled the score just before halftime and provided the winning goal three minutes into extra time, securing their place in the final four.

England manager Thomas Tuchel echoed some of the criticisms, expressing dissatisfaction with his team's performance despite the crucial win. "We made life very difficult for ourselves today," Tuchel said after the match. "The result is amazing. But not happy with the performance. In every sense. Again the commitment is there, but we made life very difficult for us in the way we played, how we played. Sloppy, a lot of technical mistakes, not fast enough, not repetitive enough. We were lucky today."

Tuchel did acknowledge and praise the team's spirit and resilience in overcoming adversity. "To overcome adversity and to dig in and to find ways to win is on the absolutely highest level. They cannot get enough praise for that," he stated. However, he maintained his critical stance on the team's style of play, adding, "I'm also a football coach and I think we can play better... I'm proud, and I'm happy and I feel so connected to this team because they just do whatever it takes. They just refuse to lose. They overcome obstacles and adversity. But I also have demands. We want to bring out the best in us. In my head I am just not fully satisfied and I stand by that. I think we can play faster, we can play more clinical."

Despite the critiques, England has advanced to the World Cup semifinals, with two matches remaining in the competition.
