Football Association insiders have dismissed any notion of conflict between head coach Thomas Tuchel and player Jude Bellingham following England's hard-fought victory over Norway. The differing perspectives on the team's performance emerged in the immediate aftermath of the extra-time win in Miami.
Tuchel described his team as "lucky" to advance, citing elements of their play that disappointed him, such as sloppiness and tactical errors. Bellingham, however, appeared to counter this, stating that sometimes teams have to "win dirty" and questioning whether the coach understood the challenges of playing in intense conditions against formidable opponents like Erling Haaland.
Despite the apparent divergence in their remarks, FA officials maintain that relations between Tuchel and Bellingham are strong. The prevailing view within the camp is that emotions run high in the moments after a critical match, and that Bellingham may not have had the full context of Tuchel's comments. Tuchel himself, in a later press conference, praised Bellingham's "world-class performance" in crucial moments.
Tuchel had previously expressed dissatisfaction with aspects of the team's execution, stating, "we made life very, very difficult for us in the way we played... Sloppy, tactical mistakes, not fast enough. Not repetitive enough. We were lucky enough." Bellingham, who scored his fifth and sixth goals of the tournament in the match, responded by highlighting the difficulty of facing Norway and the need for pragmatical wins. "You're not going to win every game, popping the ball and making 1,000 passes," Bellingham said. "Sometimes you have to win dirty, and we've done that again tonight."
Tuchel was quick to smooth over any perceived rift, emphasizing the team's "highest level" of spirit and belief in overcoming adversity. He added, "But I'm also a football coach and I think we can play better." The belief is that both Tuchel and Bellingham, described as serial winners, remain aligned as England prepares for their World Cup Final match against Argentina in Atlanta.
