England Advances Despite Chaotic Victory Over Papua New Guinea

England edged closer to a Rugby League World Cup exit after a 34-12 victory over Papua New Guinea was characterized by a chaotic and error-strewn performance that will likely prove insufficient for advancement.

Following an opening loss to Tonga, England's objective in their remaining group games was to win convincingly to harbor any hope of reaching the semifinals. After a dominant 82-0 win against France, England led 22-0 against Papua New Guinea within 22 minutes with tries from Matty Ashton, AJ Brimson, Dominic Young, and Harry Smith. However, the team's performance faltered significantly thereafter.

Repeatedly losing possession and conceding penalties allowed Papua New Guinea back into the game, with Dudley Dotoi and Gairo Voro scoring tries for the Kumuls. The team committed 21 errors, achieving only a 57% completion rate, a performance described as inadequate for international play.

This result means England can only reach the last four if Tonga defeats Samoa by more than 46 points. Given Samoa's strength, particularly their 34-6 victory over Tonga 12 months ago, such an outcome appears improbable, as England has not defeated their neighbors since 2018.

Morgan Knowles and Mikey Lewis added second-half tries for England, but the overall performance has cast doubt on their World Cup aspirations. Head coach Brian McDermott had urged his players to maintain patience, but the team's execution struggled to meet expectations.
