An impromptu autograph session involving Egypt's World Cup squad led to a heated confrontation between a member of the team's coaching staff and Dallas police officers in a hotel lobby.
Dramatic footage captured two members of the Egyptian staff arguing with officers who were attempting to break up the interaction with fans. One individual was identified by multiple outlets as assistant coach Ibrahim Hassan, the twin brother of Egypt's head coach, Hossam Hassan.
The incident occurred in Dallas shortly before Egypt's last-32 match against Australia. The Dallas Police Department stated via X that the issue has since been resolved. According to the department, officers responded to the hotel at the request of security regarding an individual without event credentials attempting to gain access. It was later determined that the individuals were not displaying credentials properly, which is a requirement.
"The situation was resolved on scene, and DPD met with representatives of the team to address their concerns. The matter has since been resolved," the post read.
Reports indicate the confrontation began after Egyptian supporters gathered to take photographs with winger Hassan Trezeguet inside the team's hotel. Ibrahim Hassan then approached one of the fans, and a police officer instructed him to step back. The situation escalated, with officers pushing Hassan away as he shouted at them and repeatedly swore. Other members of the Egyptian delegation intervened to de-escalate the situation.
This incident occurred amidst other notable events at the North American World Cup. In a separate event in Monterrey, a woman required rescue by a crane after becoming trapped on a fence while attempting to enter a World Cup fan zone. The woman became wedged on the 13-foot perimeter fence while trying to sneak into the sold-out event and was unable to move forward or climb back down. Emergency services were called after initial attempts to free her failed. A telescopic crane was deployed to lower her safely from the fence.
The fan zone had reached full capacity for the match between Mexico and Ecuador, and authorities had advised fans to watch elsewhere. Local reports also described instances of fans attempting to climb fences and force their way through gates, leading to a law enforcement response that reportedly included pepper spray and tear gas, which triggered a stampede.
Egypt went on to defeat Ecuador 2-0, with goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez. The team is scheduled to face England in the Round of 16 at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on July 5.
