Eeli Tolvanen Embraces Role with New York Rangers
Forward Eeli Tolvanen discusses his offseason, contract signing, and what he aims to bring to the Rangers.
Eeli Tolvanen is preparing for his first season with the New York Rangers, looking to bring energy to his new team after an offseason that included uncertainty about his playing future. The 27-year-old forward signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Rangers just 27 days before the team's Opening Night.
Tolvanen described his offseason as "totally different" and "a little stressing" as he waited in Finland to finalize his contract and secure a visa. He noted the difficulty of not knowing where he would end up playing. "You didn’t know where you’re going to end up. What are you going to do with your stuff? I had my stuff in Seattle. You’re waiting in Finland. You need a visa to get here and all that," Tolvanen told Sports+.
Despite the challenges, Tolvanen expressed happiness with his eventual landing spot. "I’m happy that I ended up here," he stated.
While Tolvanen's offensive potential, including a career-high 23-goal season two years prior, was a draw for the Rangers, the team was also reportedly interested in his defensive commitment, physical play, and north-south style. The Rangers added him as a potential third-line option.
Tolvanen's previous NHL experience includes time with the Seattle Kraken, where he recorded 10 goals and 12 assists in 63 games during the 2021-2022 season. He also played in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) for Jokerit from 2018-2020.
The Rangers' signing of Tolvanen on September 1st was part of their preparations for the upcoming NHL season, aiming to bolster their roster with versatile talent. The team began their season on Tuesday night in Boston.
