West Ham midfielder Edson Álvarez has categorically denied allegations that link him to an alleged kidnapping plot. The claims were made public by Mexican filmmaker Juan Jose Lopez Ordonez.
Ordonez alleged in an interview that he was kidnapped in November 2024, with his attackers claiming they were acting under orders from Álvarez's then father-in-law, Jonathan Toache Bedolla. The filmmaker stated that while Álvarez was not directly involved, he was aware of the plot. Ordonez also claimed he is owed 3.5 million pesos (approximately £152,000) by Álvarez following work on a documentary about the Mexico captain, and that he was involved in a property dispute with Álvarez's former father-in-law.
In a social media response, Álvarez stated, "I categorically reject any allegation or attempt to associate my name with events, conflicts, or conduct that are entirely unrelated to me." He criticized the accusations as lacking evidence and prioritized sensationalism over accuracy. Álvarez announced his legal team has been instructed to evaluate and pursue appropriate legal action against anyone disseminating false allegations.
"If anyone believes they have evidence of any wrongdoing on my part, there are authorities, prosecutors, and courts before which they can present it," Álvarez wrote. He emphasized that serious accusations require evidence presented to the proper authorities, not through media outlets.
Álvarez also addressed the connection made through his former partner's father, stating, "I have nothing to do with the events being reported." He highlighted his nearly ten-year professional career, during which he has strived to avoid media scandals and be recognized for his work.
"My priority is, and will continue to be, where it has always been: my daughters, my family, and my professional career," Álvarez concluded. The 28-year-old midfielder joined West Ham in 2023 and has made 74 appearances for the club. He has also earned 102 caps for the Mexican national team and captained them at the 2022 World Cup.
