Eddie Howe has resigned as head coach of Newcastle United, the club announced. The 48-year-old departs after nearly five years at the helm, having guided the Magpies to a 12th-place finish in the Premier League this past season.

During his tenure, Howe was instrumental in securing Champions League qualification for Newcastle on two occasions and led the team to a League Cup victory in the 2024-25 season.

"After a period of personal reflection, I have decided that now is the right time for me to step away from my role," Howe stated. "After nearly five years of giving my life, heart and soul into the club with unrelenting energy, I feel that it is in the best interests of both myself and the club to step away, recharge and take a break. Although it's been incredibly difficult to make this decision, I know in my heart that it's the right one. It has been the privilege of my lifetime to have been the manager of Newcastle United."

Newcastle confirmed that the process for recruiting a new head coach is in its advanced stages, with German coach Matthias Jaissle reportedly the favorite to take over. Howe's coaching staff, including Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches, Simon Weatherstone, and head of performance Dan Hodges, will also depart St. James' Park.
